Expands network coverage and capacity in China

CHONGQING, CHINA, 27 March 2013 – Pacnet today opened its Tier III data center in Chongqing, China, bolstering coverage of its network in China and adding to its advanced data center footprint in the Asia Pacific region. The opening follows closely on the heels of several recent developments that have expanded the reach and capacity of Pacnet’s network in China and the region.

The data center fully harnesses Pacnet’s unrivaled infrastructure in Asia Pacific as it provides direct access to Points of Presence (PoPs) in China as well as Pacnet’s wholly-owned subsea cable network. It will serve the company’s growing body of enterprise and carrier customers doing business in China and seeking access to one of the world’s largest and fastest growing digital populations.

“The opening of this data center is another significant milestone in Pacnet’s ability to provide network carriers and enterprises with the high-capacity data, network management and e-commerce needs to serve the online community in China,” said Jim Fagan, President of Managed Services, Pacnet. “A booming economy and an increasingly Internet-savvy population are driving the growth of data center services in the country. We are privileged to be the only foreign equity joint venture to provide this level of service in Chongqing and thank the Chongqing municipal government for its support.”

Speaking at the official opening ceremony, Huang Qifan, Mayor of Chongqing, said, “The Pacnet Chongqing Data Center will play a significant role in advancing Chongqing to be at the forefront of the cloud computing industry in China, and in accelerating the economic development of Chongqing as well as the Liangjiang New Area.”

Frost & Sullivan estimates that China’s data center services market is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 26% per year and will reach US$3.2 billion in 2017 . In particular, the proliferation of online gaming, social networking, search engines and content providers will spur demand for third-party data centers, according to Frost & Sullivan.

Pacnet has recently announced several expansion plans for China including the launch of new content delivery network (CDN) PoPs and plans for a data center in Tianjin capable of holding 2,000 racks. In addition, Pacnet Business Solutions (China) is the first Sino-foreign telecommunications joint venture to receive licenses to provide IP VPN service across 23 provinces and Internet data centers in China.

“Pacnet and Pacnet Business Solutions (China) have taken significant steps to enhance the competitiveness of their offerings in China,” said Grace Guang, Pacnet’s Chief of staff and General Counsel with oversight responsibility for the China business. “We are truly living up to our ambition to be a gateway to Asia Pacific’s fastest growing markets.”

Located in Chongqing’s Shuitu Hi-tech Industrial Park in Liangjiang New Area, the standalone facility delivers 14,000 square meters of carrier-neutral data center space. It will be capable of supporting up to 2,000 high power density racks with available rack power up to 12 kVA, and has a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ratio of 1.6 achieved through the use of energy-efficient power and cooling systems and modular interior design, adhering to stringent international environmental and power efficiency standards.

“Located in a bustling economic zone being developed as mainland China’s new hub for manufacturing, logistics and transport, this new world-class facility will support industry and economic growth in China’s southwest region,” said Henry Lam, General Manager of Pacnet Business Solutions (China).

The facility will have fully redundant power and cooling systems, advanced fire detection and suppression systems, as well as state-of-the-art security access systems.

Pacnet currently operates data centers across 16 cities in Asia Pacific that are interconnected by Pacnet’s high speed network.

“There is an immense opportunity for Pacnet to develop its ties to European enterprises as they embrace solutions that can accelerate the growth efficiency of their Asia Pacific business,” said Armenakas. “European enterprises and cloud-based service providers will enhance their ability to meet growth objectives by leveraging Pacnet’s unrivalled infrastructure in the region.”

Mr. Armenakas brings more than 20 years of channel and direct sales management experience to his new position and has worked in Europe and international markets. He joins Pacnet most recently from Reliance Globalcom where he was New Business Development Manager in London. Previously, he spent five years with Singtel Optus in Sydney, Australia as Senior Channel Manager for Strategic Partners, and was with Telstra for eight years with positions in the United States, Hong Kong, and Australia, all focused on delivering Asia Pacific solutions to enterprise customers.

“Europe is of strategic importance to Pacnet and we have significant plans for 2013 to further expand our network presence and sales in Europe and an exciting line up of new services in the pipeline,” said Gina Haspilaire, Vice President Enterprise Markets for North America and Europe. “As we build the next evolution of our distribution partnerships and engagement across Europe, John’s deep knowledge and wide expertise, coupled with his leadership skills, will be invaluable to Pacnet.”

Sunnyvale, CA and Hong Kong – March 18, 2013 – Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN), a leading provider of Digital Optical Networks and Pacnet, a leading provider of integrated network and technology solutions in the Asia-Pacific region, announced today Pacnet’s deployment of the Infinera DTN-X platform, featuring 500 Gigabit per second (Gb/s) long-haul super-channels.

The DTN-X platform provides Pacnet with what we believe is the industry’s most technologically advanced solution for 100 Gb/s services and is the largest regional deployment of 100 Gb/s technology to date.

Pacnet owns and operates EAC and C2C, Asia’s leading state-of-the-art fiber optic submarine cable networks with 21 cable landing stations extending from India to the U.S. The network spans 46,800 km and serves global customers with a comprehensive range of network and managed services.

“The Infinera DTN-X FlexCoherent modulation capabilities, integrated control plane, and seamless subsea to terrestrial integration with the existing network further enhances our Data Center connectivity and network virtualization strategy,” said Andy Lumsden, Pacnet Chief Technology Officer. “The ability to deliver and commission the DTN-X rapidly meant that our network upgrade was fully deployed within nine weeks, allowing us to deliver services to customers with a high level of confidence and resilience. The Infinera solution greatly advances our Layer 3 to Optical convergence and Network-as-a-Service initiatives.”

Infinera is the first to deliver 500 Gb/s long-haul super-channels based on Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) and the FlexCoherentTM Processor, scaling transport capacity without scaling operational complexity. Infinera’s PICs combine multiple optical subsystems on a single IC and results in fewer fiber connections, less space, and less power when compared to conventional systems based upon discrete components.

Today, Infinera introduced FastSMPTM, what we believe is the industry’s only hardware accelerated Shared Mesh Protection technology. FastSMPTM will deliver dramatic improvements in network-wide resilience to service providers while lowering total network costs.

“Pacnet operates one of the most robust and physically meshed SLTE networks in the world and we believe that the DTN-X with its FastSMPTM capability compliments the needs of Pacnet and its customers by offering the highest service levels within the region,” said Andrew Bond Webster, VP APAC Sales for Infinera.

The Infinera DTN-X increases network efficiency by converging 500Gb/s long-haul super- channels with 5 Terabits of integrated OTN switching per bay, resulting in much more efficient utilization when compared to conventional WDM architectures. Infinera’s Bandwidth VirtualizationTM simplifies service deployment, enabling operators to deploy networks in days and services in minutes, thereby lowering operational costs.

About Infinera
Infinera specializes in Digital Optical Networking systems that are designed to continually improve the economics of optical networking by combining the speed of optics with the simplicity of digital. Infinera is unique in its use of breakthrough semiconductor technology: Large Scale Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC). Infinera’s systems leverage PIC technology to provide customers with a service-ready architecture that enables faster time-to-revenue and greater profitability through network efficiency and the ability to rapidly deliver differentiated services without reengineering their optical infrastructure.

Significant investment to build new facility slated to come online in late 2013

SINGAPORE, 12 March 2013 – Pacnet today announced a US$90 million investment to build a new Tier III data center in Singapore to meet the region’s accelerating demand for connected, advanced data center and managed services. The new facility will build on strategic initiatives, that Pacnet previously announced, to focus on managed services deployed in data centers and leveraging its substantial network assets throughout Asia to serve Enterprise and Carrier customers.

“As one of the world’s most dynamic economic and financial hubs, Singapore continues to have appetite for data center services, and supply has struggled to keep up,” said Jim Fagan, President of Managed Services at Pacnet. “This new facility not only provides customers with data center and connectivity services in Singapore, but gives them access to Pacnet’s broad portfolio of managed services, allowing them to interconnect their data requirements throughout Asia.”

According to Frost & Sullivan, the Singapore data center services market is expected to grow from US$223 million in 2010 to US$550.3 million in 2017, at a compound annual growth rate of 13.8 percent .

Strategically located in the Paya Lebar area, the eight-storey, 157,000 square foot standalone facility will meet Tier III data center standards and is slated for completion in the fourth quarter of 2013. The facility will be compliant with standards of the BCA Green Mark certification, Singapore’s equivalent of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

“This facility reinforces our commitment to providing high quality, innovative data center solutions to the Singapore market, addressing customers’ needs for margin improvement, while continuing to meet environmental requirements,” said Mr Fagan.

The new data center is designed to support customer requirements for high-power density needs through the supply of 12 MVA utility connections (upgradable to 15MVA). It will be capable of supporting 1,500 high power density racks with an initial IT load of 6 Megawatts.

The facility will be carrier neutral and will be directly connected to Pacnet’s wholly-owned submarine cable networks with fully redundant power and cooling systems, advanced fire detection and suppression systems, as well as state-of-the-art security access systems.

Pacnet currently operates over 300,000 square feet of data center space across 16 cities in the region that are interconnected by Pacnet’s high speed network.

Company expanding staff to leverage key distribution channels to meet increased demand for services in Asia-Pacific

Hong Kong, 27 February 2013 – Pacnet, a leading provider of integrated network and technology solutions in the Asia-Pacific region, today announced the appointment of Brian Quinn and Jason Kitzmiller as Channel Directors. Quinn will be responsible for managing Master Agents and supporting Direct and Sub-Agents in the eastern portion of the United States while Kitzmiller will have the same responsibilities in the west.

Kitzmiller and Quinn will help to further implement Pacnet’s growth strategy, developed by CEO Carl Grivner who took over the reins last July. Pacnet recognized the market opportunity to serve more U.S. based companies that have operations in Asia or are looking to expand to the region.

Quinn and Kitzmiller will work as part of Pacnet’s Enterprise Markets organization led by Cardi Prinzi who joined the company in September. The organization has resources in New York and San Francisco, as well as Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Sydney, Taipei, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Seoul, Melbourne and markets in China and India.

“The Asia-Pacific region has seen explosive growth over the past several years and more-and-more U.S. based companies are either looking to expand their current operations in the region or create new operations – particularly in China and India,” said Prinzi. “The addition of Brian and Jason will help Pacnet to focus on the agent channel to increase our distribution in the U.S. That coupled with our extensive reach in Asia positions us well to capitalize on this trend.”

Pacnet’s service portfolio includes extensive MPLS coverage throughout the region with interconnected data centers in most major markets including China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Sydney, Australia. Over the past several months, Pacnet has announced an expansion of its IP VPN license in China, as well as key data center builds, and an investment into its sub-sea fiber networks to build a 100Gbps network.

The company also recently announced an extension of its ‘Lightning’ service for high-frequency traders that connects major stock exchanges in the region, namely SGX, HKEx and OSE (ATTokyo DC) and includes low latency connectivity back to our PoP in Chicago for access to Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Kitzmiller brings 14 years of channel and direct sales management experience to his new position. He has worked in the domestic market as well as in international markets. He joins Pacnet following five years with The Douceur Group as Director of Business Development and Channel Sales where he was based in Hong Kong.

Adds new CDN Points-of-Presence to increase performance and speed of digital content delivery

HONG KONG, 25 January 2013 – Pacnet announced today that it has enhanced Pacnet CDN, its content delivery network (CDN) service, with the addition of two new CDN Points-of-Presence (PoPs) in China, increasing the performance and speed of digital content delivery in the country.

Strategically located in Guangzhou and Tangshan, the two new PoPs will provide coverage of the northern and southern regions of China, and are situated close to major cities including Beijing and Shanghai where most of the country’s digital content is consumed.

“As more Internet users come online in China, the country’s insatiable thirst for digital content is expected to continue to grow at high rates,” said Jim Fagan, President of Managed Services, Pacnet. “These two new PoPs are keys to our strategy to capitalize on that increasing demand.”

The two new China PoPs, together with the CDN deployments during 2012 in India, Korea and Taiwan, have enhanced Pacnet CDN’s reach across the Asia Pacific region. Along with the four CDN PoPs previously deployed in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia, Pacnet now has a total of nine self-owned and managed CDN PoPs in the region. By deploying more CDN PoPs, Pacnet is able to store and deliver digital content at CDN PoPs in local markets, which accelerates the speed and distribution of content, such as rich media and applications, to Internet users.

Additionally, through its CDN federation partners in Europe and the United States, Pacnet has access to a total of 42 PoPs worldwide.

Pacnet CDN, which rides on Pacnet’s wholly-owned network and hosting infrastructure, delivers a comprehensive suite of solutions, including Content Delivery Service, Dynamic Content Acceleration, Content Origin Storage and Value-Added Services.

Initiatives designed to meet Asia’s growing capacity needs

HONG KONG, 17 January 2013 – Pacnet today announced plans to deploy an optical mesh network with 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) technology and integrated Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching utilizing its wholly owned subsea cable network EAC-C2C, giving it the ability to meet explosive future capacity needs throughout Asia.

The deployment will create the foundation for Pacnet to offer customers a seamless set of network services between its inventory of interconnected data centers throughout the region.

“With the rapid intra-Asia digital content growth continuing to fuel soaring bandwidth demands in the region, this latest initiative is a significant step in strengthening our network services to handle the continued growth of Internet traffic,” said Andy Lumsden, Chief Technology Officer of Pacnet. “We are committed to making our infrastructure more agile and efficient, providing a competitive edge for our customers in a rapidly evolving market.”

Enabling greater efficiency and capacity management flexibility, the new backbone integrating subsea fiber infrastructure and terrestrial backhaul links will support pure packet technology in the optical core, in addition to the Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (DWDM/SDH) technologies currently utilized by the existing core network. The upgrades are scheduled to begin in early 2013.

“The increase in network capacity will significantly improve the efficiency of data transmission across regional network routes and allow Pacnet to extend and expand its Carrier Ethernet and Virtual Private Line Service capabilities. The upgraded core network will also provide for high bandwidth connections with speeds up to 100GE demanded by large carrier and enterprise customers,” said Mr Lumsden.

EAC-C2C is the leading state-of-the-art fiber optic submarine cable network in Asia, spanning 36,800 km with cable landing stations throughout Asia including Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines and China. With multiple landing points in most locations, EAC-C2C provides Pacnet’s customers with greater route diversity.

The Hong Kong CloudSpace2 facility is the first data center in Hong Kong to achieve a top rating for green design excellence

HONG KONG, 12 December 2012 – Pacnet announced today that it has been awarded the LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System Gold Certification™ by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for the company’s newest data center, Hong Kong CloudSpace2 (HKCS2), located at Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate, Hong Kong.

HKCS2, a Tier III data center built within the site of one of Pacnet’s wholly-owned cable landing stations, is the first data center in Hong Kong to achieve this level of LEED certification. In order to achieve the required standards, Pacnet ensured that efficiency was central to every design decision, including minimizing water usage for landscape maintenance, to using solar-powered lighting and intelligent lighting control. Additionally, the cooling design achieves a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of less than 1.5, helped by a highly-efficient, water-cooled chilled water system and computer room air conditioning units.

“Earning this recognition reaffirms Pacnet’s unwavering commitment to our customers that goes beyond just delivering best-in-class integrated connectivity and managed services, but also our efforts towards more efficient and sustainable business operations,” said Carl Grivner, Chief Executive Officer, Pacnet.

HKCS2 provides customers with direct access to Pacnet’s EAC-C2C subsea cable network as well as high-speed connectivity to Pacnet’s network of 24 data centers across the region. Launched in March 2012, customers in HKCS2 include some of the world’s leading content providers, financial exchanges and technology firms.

“Pacnet’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, USGBC. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and Pacnet’s CloudSpace2 data center, the first LEED GOLD certified data center in Hong Kong, serves as a prime example of just how much we can accomplish.”

LEED is an internationally recognized rating system for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. The certification program, which was developed by USGBC in 2000, provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home or community was designed and built based on approaches targeted at attaining high performance in five key areas – sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

HKCS2 is part of Pacnet’s suite of premier data center facilities that are built to exacting standards to offer a high-availability environment ensuring the uninterrupted performance of mission-critical equipment. These facilities will exceed the high-power, high-performance and high-efficiency requirements of today’s content-driven organizations and multi-site enterprises.

Facility will be one of Pacnet’s largest data centers

TIANJIN, CHINA, 5 December 2012 – Pacnet today announced the signing of a definitive agreement with the Tianjin Wuqing government to jointly develop a data center in the Tianjin Wuqing Business District located in the Wuqing district in Tianjin, China.

Officials from MIIT, Tianjin Economic and Information Technology Commission, Wuqing District government and Carl Grivner, Chief Executive Officer of Pacnet were present at the signing ceremony held today in Wuqing. As part of the agreement, Pacnet’s equity joint venture in China, Pacnet Business Solutions (China) or PBS, and the Tianjin Wuqing government will build and operate a data center in the Tianjin Wuqing Business District that is capable of hosting 2,000 racks, making it one of Pacnet’s largest data centers.

“We are excited to work with the Tianjin Wuqing government to support their latest initiative to develop the Tianjin Wuqing Business District into a leading IT hub in North China,” said Mr. Grivner. “We believe our strong international presence coupled with our local China expertise, will enable us to support Tianjin’s development into a key technology hub in North China.”

The Tianjin Wuqing Business District is strategically located between Beijing and Tianjin and an ideal location for enterprises looking to grow in North China.

“We are delighted to partner with Pacnet to deliver advanced data center capabilities in the Tianjin Wuqing Business District to meet the increasing demand for these services by the growing numbers of enterprises that are setting up here,” said Zhang Yong, Secretary of Wuqing District Committee of the CPC, at the signing ceremony.

“With the international expertise from Pacnet, the new data center will be constructed and operated to meet international standards for sustainability and efficiency. This will support the latest efforts by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to promote the development of green data centers in China,” said Xie Zhigang, Director of Cloud Research Center, MIIT.

The new facility will cater to the growing demand for data center and managed services for both China and foreign enterprises. Construction of the data center is estimated to cost about RMB 450 million (US$72 million) and will begin in early 2013, and is expected to be ready for service in early 2014.

The facility will be Pacnet’s fifth data center in China and will support PBS’s growing capabilities across the country. It builds on strategic initiatives that Pacnet has recently announced, including the sharpened focus on expanding its China network and range of services. Pacnet took an important step in this direction earlier this year in October, when it announced that PBS had obtained a license to expand its IP VPN service to cover 23 provincial administrative zones, up from 20 cities.

Pacnet currently operates over 300,000 sq ft of data center space across 24 data centers in the region that are interconnected by Pacnet’s high speed network.
